Best Workout Clothes for Women Overall: lululemon

A woman stretching her leg in front of a bench
lululemon

Pros:

  • A wide variety of sizes and inseams are available
  • One of the best brands for Petites
  • Barely-there fabric feel
  • Many colors and prints are available
  • Great deals in the ‘We Made Too Much‘ sale section

Cons:

  • More of an investment, price-wise

lululemon has mastered the art of designing workout clothing that holds up year after year, while also coming out with new styles to stay ahead of the trends. Most people agree that it’s difficult to find another workout brand that offers such a wide range of sizes (leggings are offered in sizes 0 to 20.) And the best part? The brand has been working to implement more sustainable practices — you can shop their ‘Like New’ resale section for some gently used lululemon gear at lower prices.

New York Post Review: I’ve lived in lululemon since middle school, and I still have some quintessential early 2000s lululemon staples in the back of my closet (thankfully, the high-rise Groove leggings ($118) have really made a comeback). But when it comes to their iconic, best-sellers, there is no question — that would be the Align Bra ($58) and Align leggings ($98-$118), which come in four different lengths: 23″, 25″, 28″, and 31″. Having the option to tailor these to your height makes a world of difference when it comes to working out — no more scrunched ankles for the petite ladies.

Best for a Serious Sweat: Fanka

woman conversing with another woman inside a gym
Fanka

Pros:

  • The technology used in the clothing is made specifically for women, based on years of research
  • Targeted support for the joints and muscles
  • Different fabrics are used for varying levels of support (low to high impact)
  • Range of color options and unique designs

Cons:

  • Performance technology includes more unique designs, so there are fewer solid sets to choose from

As we age, the risk of joint and muscle injuries becomes top-of-mind, even more so for women who workout or train frequently. Take me as an example. I’ve been running for years, and my knees are not what they used to be. I’ve always wondered if there was a workout brand that made clothing with specialized support for muscles and joints. Enter Fanka.

Known for its high-tech PowerLift technology, all of Fanka’s products are designed to harness the principles of kinesiology to deliver exceptional support and offer more stability for your muscles with cooling and moister-wicking capabilities. The designs are based on years of research and made just for women, setting them apart from many other traditional activewear brands. I had to see what all the hype was about, so I tested the Body Sculpt Bra Tank ($65) and Body Sculpt 3-Pocketful Leggings ($90).

New York Post Review: The first thing I noticed was the pockets. Two on the side, and one on the back (an incredible feat for women’s clothing). Smoothness was another obvious draw. Fanka uses techniques like 3D printing to create different tension levels across a single layer of fabric without extra seams. The designs are a bit different from typical sets. You’ll see bright, two-toned color combos, and the leggings are even reversible, so you can choose between print and solid. But, the best part of all, while working out in my Fanka set, I felt that high-energy, jumpiness that comes from supportive clothing. The day after my HITT class, I felt very little soreness. I’ll leave it at this: Fanka is on to something, and it’s a brand worth trying out.

Best for Activewear Basics: Quince

A woman wearing a green jacket
Quince

Pros:

  • The brand utilizes eco-friendly materials like recycled polyester, organic cotton, and Tencel
  • Can select inseam length for leggings
  • Many different minimalistic basics are available for those looking to build a “capsule” activewear wardrobe
  • Exceptionally soft, yet supportive fabric, per testing and reviews

Cons:

  • Limited size range (not ideal for plus-size)
  • More basic designs, and a smaller selection than some dedicated activewear brands

If affordable luxury is what you’re after, Quince is the place to be. The brand offers a sea of high-quality, timeless basics without the high price tags, and the activewear selection seems to be flourishing. Rather than pumping out trend-inspired pieces, Quince focuses on well-constructed, minimalistic designs offered in neutral and basic colors — activewear that never goes out of style. The popular Ultra-Form fabric is butter soft, built with four-way stretch, and features quick-dry, moisture-wicking, and anti-microbial technology. While the sizing is limited for plus size, the leggings are offered in three inseams for a perfect length.

New York Post Review: “I never imagined a day that I’d find a pair of leggings I like just as much as my lululemon Aligns. Well, that day has arrived, and I owe it all to Quince’s Ultra-Form Leggings ($40). These leggings are soft, and smooth, and slide over the skin so easily that I actually look forward to going to the gym. The thicker waistband adds some shape right where you want it. And, while I’m slightly less obsessed with the $30 Ultra-Form Bra (I was hoping for a little more support), it does provide good coverage and the wide bands make it much comfier than some others I’ve tested. Add the Ultra-Form Jacket ($50) to that set and you’ll nail the gym-girl look without the outrageous price tag. Quince’s sets are more minimalistic and understated, which I love for anyone looking to build a basic capsule wardrobe for the gym. The best part? They’re also reasonably priced. Something rare when it comes to activewear.”

Sizes: XS-XL | Shipping: Standard shipping is always free. Delivery time is typically 6-9 business days Returns: Items may be returned for a full refund or exchange within 365 days of the purchase date if they meet specific criteria.

Most Fashionable: Carbon38

woman wearing a black sports garment and leggings
Carbon38

Pros:

  • Carries other brands in addition to Carbon38
  • Variety of fabrics for every type of workout
  • Very sleek, sophisticated designs (many color options)
  • The fabric seems high-quality and durable, per our testing

Cons:

  • On the pricey side
  • Limited sizing

Carbon38 is known for its elevated, sleek activewear selection, and its knockout silhouettes will have your entire workout class dropping their jaws. You’ve probably seen their glossy, liquid styles before — they’re hard to miss. The best-selling second skin fabrication, Melt, is one of our personal favorites. It offers ample support while sitting smoothly on the skin and following the body’s movement without any constriction. Everything has a bold, yet feminine edge and delivers just the right amount of support for your workout needs. The only flaw is in the price tags. But for an investment piece with a fashionable flare, none is better. Plus, Carbon38 carries a variety of other upscale workout brands, so you can find exactly what you’re looking for.

New York Post Review: A yoga instructor at my gym put me on to this woman-owned brand, and I haven’t looked back since. The Scoop Racerback Bra ($75) is ideal for everyday wear, lounging, or running errands. For a practical running pant, I can also recommend High Rise Sport Pocket Leggings ($118). Side pockets make for convenient access to your belongings, fitting keys, a card, and a phone. Not to mention, the combination of nylon and spandex is butter-soft and fits like a glove. While I may not attempt a marathon in these, they’re pretty much always reliable for a quick jog or hot yoga class.

Sizes: XS-XL | Shipping: Free shipping on orders over $199, Economy is $6.99, Economy Select is $12, Expedited is $25, Overnight is $50 | Returns: After selecting a return reason, you can make an exchange or proceed with a return. Exchanges are free.

Best Flattering Women’s Workout Clothes: Glowmode

A woman in leggings and a sports bra.
Glowmode

Pros:

  • Buttery soft material
  • Leggings with pockets
  • Budget-friendly, with many options less than $25
  • Holds up well after multiple washings

Cons:

  • Some may find that sizes run large

There are some workout clothing brands notorious for their high price tags — fortunately, Glowmode isn’t one of them. However, that doesn’t mean their offerings are of low quality. On the contrary, the brand’s leggings, tops, and sports bras are surprisingly durable, with ultra-soft fabric and sweat-friendly designs that you’ll quickly want to stock up on.

From Crossover Leggings to matching running jackets, it has something for every fitness occasion, including skirts, sports gloves to gym bags and runner’s belt bags.

Glowmode

New York Post Review: “I was really surprised by the quality of the leggings and sports bras from Glowmode. For workout clothes, I’ve always thought that the more expensive stuff tends to hold up longer, but Glowmode completely proved my theory wrong. The fabric is so soft and breathable, and I love that the leggings have pockets — oddly rare in workout clothes for women. I’ve worn Glowmode on very long runs, aerobics classes and lifting, and they’ve held up beautifully, not showing sweat stains or losing their shape. The material isn’t see-through, either, and really smooths without feeling confining or like I’m wearing shapewear cosplaying as workout gear. Highly recommend, especially if you exercise almost daily, and need to own multiple sets but don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars.” — Holly J Coley, commerce deputy editor

Best for Yoga and Pilates: Alo Yoga

a woman in a sports outfit
Alo

Pros:

  • Wide variety of activewear for a variety of occasions (running, training, yoga, pilates, tennis, and lounging)
  • New colors and styles drop frequently
  • Celeb-approved styles
  • High-quality fabrics that are built to last

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • Some reviewers shared that some materials and waistbands veer on the tighter side (recommended to size up)

By now, most of us have seen the ultimate ‘cool girl’ workout brand all over social media. Alo is a cult favorite among A-listers like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Taylor Swift. It’s no surprise that they all love Alo. The brand offers a quality selection of durable staples like their Airlift and Alosoft leggings (offered in both full length and 7/8) as well as more fashionable statement pieces like their bold bomber jackets, shockingly flattering onesies, and more accessories.

New York Post Review: There’s no hiding that this is one of my favorite workout brands. I love that you can take your Alo outfit from a sweat-drenched workout class to an elegant brunch in the city, and back home just in time for a movie. It’s the perfect combination of wearable, functional, and stylish. Their signature fabric is a blend of nylon and spandex — and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the leggings retain heat while venturing outside in the middle of January and stay just as cool on a mid-July run. Alo also frequently adds new seasonal styles to their roster (like these luxurious velvet leggings), which makes it easy to shop there year-round. So, does the brand live up to the hype? I’d say so.

Sizes: XXS- 2XL | Shipping: 1 to 5-day shipping available | Returns: Alo Yoga accepts returns for a full refund within 30 days of purchase.

Best Splurge: NEIWAI

A woman in a black outfit leaning on a wall
NEIWAI

Pros:

  • Female-founded and female-led to create designs built for women by women
  • Easy mix-and-match pieces
  • The company uses recycled packaging
  • Plenty of unique options for dancers/ballerinas

Cons:

  • More neutrals, fewer bright prints, colors, and patterns
  • More expensive
  • Some pieces require hand washing
  • Recommended sizing up on some pieces

It’s no surprise that NEIWAI is a women-owned and women-led business. This lesser-known athleisure gem combines all the best elements of feminine style with dedicated sportswear. There is a wide variety of neutrals that afford many mix-and-match opportunities. One of their more unique offerings is the ballet and dance section, which is filled with a lovely assortment of wrap bras, knotted cardigans, and slit-leg balloon joggers.

New York Post Review: For those of us who live in matching sets, NEIWAI is the place to be. The brand’s neutral palette — with shades like toffee, spice, and chocolate — looks just as delicious as they sound. Consider pairing the Mousse Medium Support Long Sports Bra ($89) and High Waist Leggings ($89). Keep in mind that pieces are more delicate, and the brand recommends hand-washing for best results. Their in-depth reviews provide informative details on overall ratings for fit, comfort, quality, and support, which is very helpful for customers to make the best decisions.

Sizes: XS-XXL | Shipping: Free shipping for orders over $50 | Returns: NEIWAI offers free returns on unworn or defective garments for all eligible US orders. Shipping fees are non-refundable.

Most Comfortable: Vuori

A woman wearing white jacket and green leggings
Vuori

Pros:

  • Soft, breathable material
  • Designed with recycled materials
  • Wrinkle-free
  • Reviewers mention products are durable and long-lasting

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • Less vibrant colors and patterns

Most shoppers know Vuori for their dreamy, cloud-soft joggers, but the rest of their activewear is just as easy to live in. The brand has carefully designed each piece with its California origins in mind. You can see it in the details — like the bowtie drawcords on their leggings, subtle slits in the tennis dresses, and cleverly ruched sports bras. Think zen yogi meets relaxed surfer vibe.

New York Post Review: Prepare to enter dreamland: Vuori’s material is cloud-soft and wrinkles far less than some other performance brands. However, for most shoppers, the real selling point is the fact that Vuori’s pieces are exceptionally durable, holding up for years with minimal stretching or snags. They don’t sacrifice style, either. The unique cuts like the one on the bestselling All That Feels Sports Bra ($58) and Daily Skirt ($68) bring a level of sophistication to workout clothing. I recommend anything from the signature DreamKnit collection, too. These pieces are made to make you look and feel your best, and many are also made with recycled materials.

Sizes: XXS-XXL | Shipping: Free ground shipping for orders over $75, Express | Returns: Vuori accepts returns for gear purchased through their website and at their Vuori retail store locations within 120 days for a refund back to the original form of payment.

Best for Everyday: FP Movement

A woman holding a tennis racket and ball
Free People

Pros:

  • Great selection of outerwear for a variety of seasons
  • Lots of stretchy fabrics, elastic waistbands, everything designed with comfort in mind
  • 1% of FP Movement net proceeds benefit non-profit partner Girls Inc.

Cons:

  • Best for yoga and lighter workouts — fewer options for high-impact workouts

Free People has built their brand around the carefree, bohemian, tomboy aesthetic that we all know and love. Their activewear line, FP Movement, has broken into the health and wellness space with a free-spirited, inclusive collection of workout clothing that inspires you to get moving and feel your best. It’s full of bright colors and vibrant prints that will certainly bring some joy into your next yoga studio or pilates class.

New York Post Review: If you’re looking for activewear built specifically for lighter or medium-impact activities, FP Movement is probably you’re best bet. From my review, I was able to test their best-selling Never Better Leggings ($98) and Square Neck Sports Bra ($48), which come in 14 unique colorways. The four-way stretch makes all the difference — the material is airy, breathable, and moves with your body without feeling clingy. They also offer a wide variety of outerwear pieces that would make a great addition to your treks into the wilderness.

Sizes: XS-XL | Shipping: FP Movement offers standard, express, and free shipping | Returns: If Free People receives your return at their warehouse within 30 days of delivery, they will credit your original form of payment. If it’s received after 30 days, a Free People e-gift card will be issued.

Best Plus-Size: Girlfriend Collective

Two women posing for a picture.
Girlfriend Collective

Pros:

  • Many fabrics are made with recycled nylon, plastic bottles, etc.
  • Re-Girlfriend program for store credit
  • A variety of fabrics is available for every type of workout style — luxe, rest, float, and compression
  • Extended sizing (plus-size friendly)

Cons:

  • Variety of colors but fewer bright, patterned pieces
  • Detailed care instructions — brand recommends using a microfiber filter or filtering wash bag

Warning! All of your girlfriends are about to be raiding your closet. But really, what’s not to love about the Girlfriend Collective? This brand offers four different fabrics tailored to different types of activity levels. You’d never guess that their clothes are made out of trash — but they are. Fabrics are designed from fibers made from recycled water bottles, fishing nets, and other waste that would be discarded into the oceans and landfills. There is also a Re-Girlfriend program which allows customers to donate their old Girlfriend clothing for some store credit (sounds like a pretty great deal to us).

New York Post Review: The gym girlies will appreciate the variety of styles and materials offered by the Girlfriend Collective. Runners may opt for Compressive pieces to keep everything held in for sprints, while yogis can head to the Float section to achieve the deepest stretches of their lives. While there are a variety of shades (especially soothing neutrals), I do wish that there were a few more brighter or patterned pieces to pick from. Regardless, Girlfriend Collective is easily the best option for those looking to shop with the environment in mind.

Sizes: XXS-6XL | Shipping: Only standard shipping is available | Returns: Girlfriend Collective gladly accepts unworn, unwashed items with the tags and/or hygiene liners still attached within 30 days of their ship date

Best Activewear and Swimwear: Lspace

A woman standing in front of a glass door
Lspace

Pros:

  • Elevated, modern looks that are appropriate for in and out of the gym
  • Variety of unique cuts and styles in addition to regular leggings and sports bras
  • The material is lightweight, stretchy and breathable

Cons:

  • Fewer high-support options, better for lower-impact workouts

Admittedly, I’ve always thought of Lspace as that *it girl* bikini brand and didn’t realize it was also stocked with a wonderland of activewear. Upon further investigation and testing, I found that it was not just activewear — but elevated activewear. We’re talking good-looking, one-of-a-kind feminine silhouettes with modern design elements; cutouts, cross-backs, dainty princess seams, and more. This brand can easily be worn in and out of the gym, layered with regular clothes, or styled with accessories.

New York Post Review: While you’re sure to find plenty of basic leggings and sports bras, Lspace also offers some more creative pieces like the Ace Jumpsuit ($150). These pieces have the elasticity and support you’d desire in lower-impact workout clothes, but truthfully, they look much better than a regular gym set. The lines are clean, the colors are bright, and the adjustable straps give you that snatched perfect fit. Another unexpected perk — removable bra cups. Lspace didn’t miss a beat. It’s giving California surf girl meets polished Hampton’s pickleball sweetheart.

Sizes: XS-L Shipping: Overnight, 2-day, Standard | Returns: If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, Lspace offers free returns within 30 days of receipt for any full-priced items placed within the U.S.

Best Variety: Gymshark

Two women posing for a picture
Gym Shark

Pros:

  • Frequent sales and a 10% discount for students
  • Good array of colors, graphic styles, and patterns
  • Thicker fabric (best for HIT training and running)
  • Viral scrunch leggings

Cons:

  • Some customers said shipping was slow
  • Material is slightly stiffer than some competitors — better to size up for a looser fit

Gymshark wants you to attack all your fitness goals with their sweat-wicking and physique-shaping activewear. Perhaps the best part about this brand is that they offer great deals to students looking to stay active. The process is simple: students who verify their identity through Student Beans can receive 10% off all Gymshark gear. It’s hard to pass on a deal that good.

New York Post Review: As an avid runner, I can appreciate workout clothing that offers a bit more coverage and support — typically thicker material with nylon for some added breathability. Gymshark leggings fit the mark, and they’re also impressively flattering. The Sweat Seamless leggings ($18+) feature a ribbed, shaped waistband to ensure maximum coverage and the Crossover Leggings ($30+) offer a curve-sculpting, criss-cross design that adds some style to any workout. Many pieces are currently available for up to 50% off, so be sure to shop while the deal lasts.

Sizes: XS-L | Shipping: Standard, Express |Returns: Any unwanted product must be returned within 30 days from when your Gymshark order is delivered

Best Lightweight: NOBULL

A woman sitting on the floor with her hands on her head
NOBULL

Pros:

  • Lots of reviews on products, so it’s easy to find out if they fit true to size
  • Pieces shift around less while working out
  • Spandex offers some stretch
  • Large selection of training shoes

Cons:

  • Sizes are not numerical (go up to XXL, so perhaps limited options for extended plus-size)

One of my biggest gripes with workout clothing is when they don’t stay in place. Constantly needing to pull your shorts up or readjust the straps of your sports bra is exceptionally irritating, and distracts from the task at hand — working out. While reading the reviews for NOBULL, I noticed many customers pointed out that their pieces stayed in place far better than other brands they tried. I had to put it to the test myself, so I ordered the Sleek Shorts and Sleek Crossback Sports Bra.

New York Post Review: Both items were described as “lightweight,” so I was curious to see if the material was still strong and supportive enough to stay in place. I wore them to a yoga class and was wildly impressed. As advertised, the material feels “weightless,” and lays gently on the skin. The set I tested is about 18% spandex, so there is a solid amount of stretch, but the architecture of these designs seems to hit in all the right spots. There are no awkward seams or cuts that would shift around. NOBULL clearly understands careful construction, and the clothes show for it. It’s also worth mentioning that the NOBULL sneaker section is glorious. You can find training shoes suited for various activities; running, golfing, court sports, and more.

The brand is a generalist gym junkie’s dream. There is something for everyone, and the pricing is pretty fair considering the quality of the material and thoughtfully curated designs.

Sizes: XS-XXL | Shipping: Standard| Returns: NOBULL gladly accepts unworn, unwashed, or defective merchandise purchased on nobullproject.com for return or exchange within 30 days of delivery.

Best for High-Impact: Under Armour

A woman in a blue outfit
Under Armour

Pros:

  • Range of options for every type of activity level
  • High-performance options with infrared technology that reflect your body’s energy
  • Many affordable options and frequent sales
  • Plus-size section/inclusive sizing

Cons:

  • Some reviewers mentioned that the material of some items was more constrictive or the fit ran small

If you’ve been on Instagram for the last couple of years, you’ve likely seen this brand exploding across your feed. There’s no doubt that Under Armour is quickly rising as a top competitor in the activewear market — much due to their signature glossy leggings that flatter every body type. But Under Armour’s site is also much more expansive than others — their sportswear covers a variety of needs from outfits curated for the pickleball court to technical military combat gear and everything in between. Items range from athleisure basics to compression tops and leggings, and outerwear that offers some insulation and temperature regulation for outdoor play.

New York Post Review: I’d recommend Under Armour for both serious athletes and people with more niche hobbies. Their high-performance options have been engineered with infrared technology that reflects your body’s energy to help you work harder and recover smarter. For someone who works out day after day, this type of material will make a huge difference in their ability to bounce back. I also love that Under Armour offers a ‘Shop by Sport’ option which allows you to browse apparel in multiple sections, including softball, hunting, golf, and more. Some specialized pieces range on the more expensive side, but there are also plenty of budget-friendly basics.

Sizes: XS-3XL | Shipping: Standard, Express, Priority | Returns: Returns for items purchased from UnderArmour.com, app, or Brand House and Factory House store locations are free within 60 days with proof of purchase.

Best for Winter Sports: P.E Nation

a woman in black and white sports garment and shorts
P.E. Nation

Pros:

  • Range of activewear that doubles as streetwear
  • Large selection of technical snow jackets, pants, and more for cold-weather sports
  • Great variety of bright colors, prints, and patterns

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • Some customers mention issues with sizing

What’s better than an activewear brand you can take from the studio to the slopes to the streets. P.E Nation has mastered it — between the bold graphics, geometric cuts, bandanna prints, stars, stripes, and layering, this brand is an iconic, trend-setting choice for every type of athlete.

It’s not all about the glitzy, glamorous style choices with P.E Nation’s bold statement pieces (although we acknowledge they are some of the best we’ve seen). But, their workout clothes are also highly versatile. We love the brand’s seasonal essentials, which have a variety of leggings, tops and warm-ups to get your through runs, yoga classes, and hot girl walks.

Sizes: 2XS-2XL | Shipping: Free Express, Global Express | Returns: Refunds for full-price items, store credit for sale items. Items must be returned within 30 days of the order confirmation date.

Best for Hiking and Walking: Outdoor Voices

woman walking in green pants
Outdoor Voices

Pros:

  • Unique graphics, styles, and bright colors
  • Variety of fabrics for every type of activity (with RecTrek fabric for outdoor wear)
  • Student discount available

Cons:

  • Smaller inventory than some competitors
  • More expensive

Embark on your next outdoor adventure with Outdoor Voices — the brand that has perfected technical clothing just for every type of outdoorswoman. Their loose, casual styles are ideal for hiking, climbing, camping and more recreational activities. There’s even an entire section dedicated to finding your ideal fleece made with 100% recycled polyester, so you can stay comfortable in any sort of climate.

Shopping for clothing built for the outdoors can be tricky. Climate-friendly fabrics and comfort are front of mind. Outdoor Voices makes it simple. Many of their pants are wind and water-resistant. One of their most-loved items — the RecTrek pants ($80) — offer an internal drawstring, two identical side pockets, and a media pocket. Customers have called them “resilient,” “dirt-shedding,” and “multi-functional.” All great adjectives to describe what sets Outdoor Voices apart from some other gym-focused brands.

Sizes: XXS-XXXL | Shipping: Free for orders over $75, Standard, Overnight | Returns: Outdoor Voices accepts returns within 45 days of purchase. Online orders can be returned to any of their shops. Final sale items are not eligible for return or exchange.

Best Cheap Workout Clothes Fabletics

woman wearing workout clothing

Pros:

  • Great perks through the monthly membership (access to fitness classes)
  • Shockingly low prices and frequent sales
  • Wide variety of colors, shades, and prints

Cons:

  • Some quality and sizing issues, per reviews
  • May not be as durable as some more expensive competitors

It’s hard to find an activewear brand that competes with Fabletics shockingly low prices. But, the brand also has a special offer that distinguishes it from many of its competitors. Shoppers pay $59.95 a month for a VIP membership, providing them with access to free fitness programs through their app as well as unbelievable sales. VIP members can access their 70% to 80% off sale on a range of trending items, from yoga pants to sports bras.

There are a few things about Fabletics that I love. The first — you can browse the “Complete the Look” and “Wear It With” sections for recommendations on matching styles, so you can create a complete set. On top of that, many of their pieces are offered in staple colorways so it’s already easy to mix and match. While the brand does offer some heavier-duty workout clothing, I prefer their loungier options, like the Oasis Pureluxe High-Waisted Pocket Kick Flares ($90 for non-members), which have deep external pockets and a very flattering high-waisted design that pairs well with just about any of their cropped tees or sports bras.

Sizes: XXS-4X| Shipping: Free for orders of $49.95 and over. $5.95 flat rate for orders under $49.95. Ships within six to 10 business days | Returns: Free returns and exchanges for members up to 90 days.

Best Compression: Set Active

woman sitting on the floor
Set Active

Pros:

  • Modern, minimalist, and on-trend styles
  • The fabric has a smoothing effect
  • Different fabric options for different needs

Cons:

  • Fewer prints to choose from
  • Limited sizing

If you appreciate neutral, minimalist styles, you’ll love Set Active. This leading athleisure brand is all over social media, known best for its contemporary, monochromatic sets that hold you in. Shoppers can select from four styles, depending on the level of support desired. There is also a sea of casual sweat sets, for post-gym recovery and relaxation. Contrary to their workout sets, many of these lounge pieces offer a more oversized, looser fit. Like some of the other premium brands on this list, Set Active doesn’t offer extended sizes beyond XL.

New York Post Review: I wanted to try Set Active’s highest compression fabric, so I selected the Power High Rise ($72, $44) leggings and matching Power Hold Bra ($56, $34). The support is next-level. Thick ribbed fabric is not for everyone, but after trying this set, I’m not sure how I am going to run in anything else. It snatches you, and I’d say it’s suitable for a variety of bust sizes. In my experience, the sizing is accurate, but the Power Hold material is meant to feel a bit snug (since the point is it holds you in).

Sizes: XXS-XXXL | Shipping: Free US Shipping on Orders $175+, $6.95 for standard shipping | Returns: You may return them for a full refund within 14 days of receiving your order. Should you wish to exchange your order or receive store credit, you have 30 days to initiate your return.

Best for Running: CALIA

A woman in a blue outfit being active
CALIA

Pros:

  • UPF technology to protect against harmful UV rays (ideal for outdoor running)
  • Moisture-wicking fabric
  • Technology to reduce odor

Cons:

  • Fewer colors and designs than some competitors

Meet the workout line that is implementing smart technology into their clothing — sun protection and odor elimination included. CALIA ‘s forward-thinking design features BodyFree Technology to inhibit odor wear after wear. Worried about sunburns while running? Don’t be. Their fabric has also been engineered with UPF Technology to help protect your skin against harmful UV rays. That means no stink, and no sunburns — truly no details forgotten. They’ve also got collections for lighter workouts as well as higher-intensity ones, so you don’t have to choose.

New York Post Review: Calia’s Inspire line is stocked with essentials that offer enough support for running and weight training, while also retaining the stretch and comfort that is optimal for some low-intensity yoga sessions. I love the versatility of these pieces and also can appreciate that they are made with human needs in mind. As someone who is always looking for a place for my wallet or phone, having leggings ($22+) that come with convenient hip pockets is essential. Many of their sports bras and bodysuits also feature adjustable straps, a game-changer for those who prefer customizable support. The best part about this brand? Testing has been done to ensure nothing is see-through. If you’re looking for intelligently engineered athleticwear, shop Calia.

Best Cute Workout Clothes: Terez

A woman in a disco outfit.

Pros:

  • Great selection of vibrant colors, patterns, and styles
  • Large selection for girls’ athletic clothing as well sizes 2T-14)
  • A mixture of loungewear and higher-impact options

Cons:

  • Some fabrics have higher compression — better for those who like a tighter fit

Stepping into Terez clothing makes you want to dive onto the dance floor. I can speak from experience. This brand is full of exciting, vibrant colors and patterns, which make so much sense (spreading joy is their mission after all). Another selling point — you can find a wide variety of girls’ activewear as well in their children’s section, which is not easy to come by. Hence, the perfect opportunity to shop for a mommy and me yoga class or a matching photoshoot.

New York Post Review: The Terez collection is constantly being updated with new styles. Baseball fans can shop the MLB collaboration now for some pieces inspired by the Dodgers, Red Socks, Cubs, and more hit teams. But, for those who prefer hitting the gym to staying in the stands, we recommend shopping in their active section. My top picks would be Action Heart-Seamed Legging in Hot Red (Currently sold out) as well as the matching Action Bralette ($67). This set is made out of their high-compression Action fabric which provides extra support for tougher workouts and offers a smooth, flattering finish. That covers all the bases in our books!

Sizes: XS-XL | Shipping: Standard, Expedited, UPS 2 Day | Returns: You can return for a refund or store credit up to 30 days from the order delivery date.

Best Budget Workout Clothing: Aerie

Aerie

Pros:

  • More affordable than some competitors
  • Great variety of options for everyday wear
  • Large range of sizes for every body type
  • Soft materials

Cons:

  • Some shoppers mentioned colors may vary a bit from product images
  • Some reviewers expressed issues with sizing

Aerie may be better known for its ultra-comfortable underwear, but the brand also offers a diverse selection of workout pieces that flatter a variety of body types. In addition to inclusive sizing, they also offer competitive pricing. Many leggings are under $40 and sports bras are under $30, making this one of the more affordable options for anyone working out on a budget.

New York Post Review: There are a couple of reasons why I love this brand. Leggings are offered from XS to XXL and come in three different lengths — so you can find a pair that hugs all your curves. The OFFLINE By Aerie High Waisted Leggings ($15) are designed with Aerie’s signature lightweight cotton material that is exceptionally breathable and soft enough to wear to the studio or to sleep. Collections are offered in a wide range of colors and cuts, but most Aerie pieces have an air of youthful, carefree, easy-going playfulness that makes it so easy to wear them day after day. I’d certainly recommend this brand to anyone interested in lower-intensity workouts or lounging, but it may not be the top choice for serious athletes.

Sizes: XXS-XXL | Shipping: Free shipping for orders $75 or more Returns: Returns with proof of purchase will be refunded in the manner in which the original purchase was made. If you don’t have proof of purchase, Aerie will allow you to make an exchange or give you store credit.

How We Tested

To provide a comprehensive review of the top workout brands, we’ve assessed each brand based on a few different factors — material, style, and fit. We tested a variety of pieces from bras to leggings, bodysuits, sweats, and more to evaluate the quality and diversity of materials and style options. Plus, we put them to the ultimate sweat test by working out in in them!

  • Material: Common fabrics used in workout clothing include cotton, nylon, spandex, bamboo, mesh, and elastane. When evaluating athleticwear that was intended for higher-impact workouts, we looked for more structured, thicker, and compressive material. For workout clothing advertised for lighter-impact workouts or yoga, we tested for breathability, elasticity, and comfort. Other points considered include the care instructions, the tendency to wrinkle, and durability.
  • Style: A few style elements were considered in evaluating each brand — the range of color options, patterns, and graphics, as well as the variety of shapes and cuts. Since the preferred style is specific to individual shoppers, our review is more focused on the variety of styles provided by each brand, versus the quality of the style that the brand offers.
  • Fit: Each brand we evaluated offered slightly different size ranges and length options. We’ve made note of brands that offer more customizable pieces — such as leggings that can be customized to different lengths and sports bras that take into consideration cup size. While workout clothing is more likely to offer some stretch than other garments, we still tested to ensure that products fit true to size or were larger or smaller than advertised. For sports bras, specifically, we evaluated whether the fit offered more or less support.
