Account Clerk – Building Department


Town of East Hampton – Account Clerk in the Building Department. The annual salary is $56,339.71 for a 40-hour work week.

An employee in this title performs specialized clerical work in keeping financial records of some variety and complexity. The work is performed in accordance with clearly established accounting methods and procedures, and is reviewed primarily through verification of financial records and statements.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in consolidating the disposition of the funds taken in by the building department as payment for various building permits and renewals, certified research copies, rental registry, certificates of occupancy, etc.
  • Receives, records, routes and deposits payments, issues receipts
  • Communicates discrepancies to the department head and the Administrative Assistant II
  • Completes the data entry of funds received into the Town’s software program and builds reports for the department head and the Administrative Assistant II
  • Assists the Administrative Assistant II in establishing the appropriate internal controls for the receipt and reconciliation of payments
  • May contact people with outstanding balance
  • Prepares and submits purchase orders for office supplies, uniforms, and necessary equipment
  • Reviews available funds in various budget lines and requests budget modifications when necessary
  • Enters requisitions into financial software
  • Updates financial records based on approved purchase orders
  • May supervise part-time and temporary office assistants during peak periods
  • May assist the public both in person and on the phone
  • Does related work as required

This is a full-time position, 40-hours per week, and the annual rate of pay is $56,339.71 with benefits including paid vacation, sick and personal time, NYSHIP Empire Plan Health Care coverage, dental and vision coverage and enrollment in the New York State and Local Retirement System.

Minimum qualifications: (a) Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience in computing and registering data in financial records, accounts, or journals; or, (b) Two (2) years of clerical experience, and six (6) credits in accounting from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State.

NOTE: Education beyond high school from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by New York State including at least three (3) credits in accounting per year may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
