Deputy Tax Receiver


Town of East Hampton-Deputy Tax Receiver. The annual salary is $80,000 for a 40-hour work week.

The Deputy Receiver of Taxes is responsible for collecting property taxes, preparing regular financial reports, maintaining tax records, and other bookkeeping and clerical work as required. Work involves significant public contact. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Tax Receiver subject to applicable New York State and Suffolk County laws and regulations. Performance is checked by frequent reconciliation and audit of tax records and bank accounts. Does related work as required.

The successful employee has a thorough knowledge of bookkeeping principles, practices, and procedures, maintenance of financial records and documents, procedures used to reconcile ledgers and accounts, and office management and supervisory skills, and demonstrates the ability to utilize Microsoft applications including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collects and records property taxes and other fees for the Town, County, school districts, etc.
  • Enters data into software program, issues receipts, reconciles the transactions entered to the monies received, and prepares the bank deposit of cash and checks received
  • Balances and reconciles multiple daily tax batches, tax ledgers, cash drawers, bank deposits, and other transactions including credit card transactions, online banking transactions, lock box transactions, mail transactions and in person transactions
  • Performs reconciliations of tax batches, accounts and ledgers on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of financial records
  • Maintains records and prepares regular reports on tax collection status, cash balances, and other financial reports as directed in Govern, Word and Excel
  • Answers telephone calls, letters, emails, and in person questions from citizens, real estate agents, mortgage companies, attorneys and others regarding property taxes, tax payments, late tax payments, etc.
  • Prepares and mails tax bills, tax receipts, courtesy notices, and other communications as necessary.
  • Supervises, assists, trains and evaluates office staff in the collection of property taxes and applicable penalties and late fees. Prepares collection windows at opening and closing
  • Assists in accounting activities
  • May assist Tax Receiver with various special projects
  • Acts on behalf of the Receiver of Taxes in his/her absence
  • Utilizes computer applications to perform duties
  • Performs related work as required

  • Keep accurate records and handle large sums of money accurately
  • Make arithmetic computations rapidly
  • Prepare detailed financial tabulations and reports, ability to follow oral and written directions,
  • Provide strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Rapidly acquire knowledge of legal, administrative and procedural regulations applicable to departmental and town activities
  • Ability to effectively supervise the work of staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale

The minimum qualifications for this position is graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalence diploma and either: (a) four years of financial record keeping experience including responsibility for maintaining a set of books including a general ledger and reconciliations; or (b) satisfactory completion of 60 college credits from a recognized college or university towards a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration or a related field and two years of financial record keeping experience including responsibility for maintaining a set of books including general ledger and reconciliations; or (c) a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized college or university in Accounting, Business Administration or related field.

The annual salary is $80,000 for a 40-hour work week. Benefits include paid vacation and personal time, NYSHIP Empire Plan Health Care coverage, dental and vision coverage and enrollment in the New York State and Local Retirement System.
