A 77-year-old man was killed trying to cross a busy Long Island highway when he was struck by two cars coming from opposite directions in under a minute, according to police.
Kenneth Cook was walking across a stretch of Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst just after 7:30 p.m. Monday when he was hit by two SUVs back-to-back and killed, Suffolk County police said.
He was first struck by a 73-year-old man driving a BMW X5 headed east, cops said.
Immediately after being struck by the BMW, Cook ended up on the other side of the highway, where he was then hit by a woman in a Ford Explorer going west, according to police.
Both drivers stayed at the scene and waited for first responders, who rushed Cook to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police detailed that the senior had not been at an intersection or crosswalk when he was hit and said the cause of the crash was Cook “walked into oncoming traffic,” police said.
Neither driver is suspected of any wrongdoing and were not ticketed, arrested or charged, police said.
