Justice Court Clerk (Spanish Speaking)


Town of East Hampton- Justice Court Clerk (Spanish Speaking) in the Justice Court -$60,455.62 annually for a 40-hour work week

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs varied clerical work, in and out of court, requiring some knowledge of statutes and laws governing the practices and procedures of Justice Courts. Work involves responsibility for the preparation and issuance of various legal papers and recording legal matters pertaining to the operation of the court. Work involves contact with attorneys and the general public regarding court functions and procedures. The work differs from that of a Justice Court Clerk in that the incumbent must also communicate with Spanish-speaking persons in Spanish and assist them in their contacts with the department. All work is performed according to standard procedures prescribed by state law, judicial determination and administrative directives. Supervision may be exercised over clerical personnel. Work is performed under the supervision of a clerical supervisor or a Justice of the Court. Does related work as required.

Responsibilities include:

  • With a minimum of supervision, prepares civil summonses, small claims summonses, court calendars, arrest warrants, bench warrants, certificates of dispositions and wedding certificates.
  • Accepts and receipts fines and fees received in the mail and/or at the court office window.
  • Accepts, receipts, and records any bail payments preparing same for deposit at financial institution.
  • Prepares dockets and organizes files for court; responds to correspondence as needed.
  • Prepares jury duty summonses and mails to prospective jurors.
  • Assists the justices during court with zoning, civil and parking calendars, when necessary
  • Answers the phone and assists with payments to be made in person or with the online payment process.
  • Operates the facsimile machine, credit card machines, scanner, office copiers and online parking payments at the court office window.
  • Assists the Senior Justice Court Clerks in the preparation of the monthly New York State Audit and Control Report, helps review documents for content, errors or omissions and correct any problems discovered after the Senior Justice Court Clerks compare the justices’ monthly cash books with the monthly reports; May also print the final reports for the Senior Justice Court Clerks and present same to the justices.
  • Maintains a professional, courteous, and helpful relationship with attorneys, court officers, justices, co-workers and the public.
  • Is available and may be called upon to interpret for Spanish speaking customers at the justice court window and/or inside the court room.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, and the annual rate of pay is $60.455.62. Benefits include paid vacation, sick and personal time, enrollment in NYSHIP Health Care, dental and vision coverage, and membership in the New York State and Local Retirement system.

The minimum qualifications for this position are graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience in general clerical work.

NOTE: Relevant additional education from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university will be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
