The Town of East Hampton is a 69-square-mile peninsula that is surrounded by 131 miles of coastline. East Hampton is home to 16,530 acres of protected open space and supports one of the highest concentrations of rare and endangered species in New York State. According to The Nature Conservancy, our Town is part of the “Last Great Places” in the Western Hemisphere.
The Natural Resource Department was founded in 1984. Its mission is to preserve, protect and conserve the Town’s natural features, resources and systems, both by providing leadership and by providing assistance to other departments, entities and individuals (Town Code § 180-5). Our Department supports enhancing the sustainability and resiliency of our environment to protect our residents, businesses and institutions.
