The Town of East Hampton is currently engaged in discussions regarding the status of its contractual relationship with R2 Architecture, the joint venture originally selected to design the Town’s new Center for Modern Aging and Human Services.
R2 Architecture is a collaboration between Ross Barney Architects of Chicago and Ronnette Riley Architect of New York. According to the joint venture, it was formed in 2015 to specifically pursue large-scale public projects. R2 was selected in 2021 through a competitive procurement process. Fifteen architectural firms submitted proposals in response to the Town’s Request for Proposals, and R2 was chosen based on its qualifications, experience with public buildings, and its alignment with the Town’s goals for an inclusive, community-focused facility.
Since entering into a contract with the Town, R2 has provided design services including programming, site planning, community engagement, and preliminary engineering. The Town has paid approximately $1.3 million for these completed phases of work.
However, the Town has become aware that a dispute has arisen between the principals of the joint venture and that litigation between Ross Barney Architects and Ronnette Riley Architect is currently pending in New York State Supreme Court.
The Town Attorney’s Office has been in consistent communication with the parties and has been closely monitoring the pending litigation. The Town Attorney’s Office believes that the matter will be resolved. If, however, it becomes apparent that a resolution cannot be reached by and between the parties, then the Town is prepared to take such steps as may be necessary to move forward in a manner that both protects and advances the best interests of the Town of East Hampton.
“The Town undertook a rigorous and transparent selection process and has acted in good faith at every stage of this project,” said Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez. “Unfortunately, the internal dispute between the two firms is disappointing and has placed the Town in a difficult position. East Hampton’s senior programs are thriving, and 403 Abrahams Path in Amagansett will give them the permanent home they deserve. As we move into the next phase, we are actively advancing plans to deliver a welcoming center that meets the needs of our growing community.”
The Center for Modern Aging and Human Services will replace the existing senior center on Springs Fireplace Road and serve as a modern hub for wellness programs, nutrition services, case management, and support for older adults. The project is a priority for the Town.
Further updates will be shared as they become available.
