News Flash • Town of East Hampton’s Steve O’Brien Recognized

The Town of East Hampton is proud to announce that Steve O’Brien, Town Maintenance Supervisor, has been recognized by the Public Employer Risk Management Association (PERMA) as a Safety Champion, highlighting his outstanding commitment to maintaining safe, functional, and welcoming facilities for both Town employees and the public.

Nominated by Town Administrator Rebecca Hansen, Steve was honored in PERMA’s Fall 2025 newsletter, which spotlights individuals across New York State who go above and beyond to promote workplace safety.

“Not only is Steve responsible for his employees’ safety but also for members of the public who utilize our facilities, whether it’s Town Hall, our parks, comfort stations, or other office locations,” Hansen wrote in her nomination. “He maintains our buildings and ensures all systems are functional and operating safely. He works with all our departments on repairs and upgrades to make sure every area is free of hazards. He oversees the majority of our custodial staff who keep facilities clean and sanitary for all to use. Steve does all of this with a smile on his face and a willingness to help. The Town is very fortunate to have him on staff.”

East Hampton Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez said, “Steve is one of those people who makes everything work behind the scenes, often without fanfare. He takes pride in every building and every detail, making sure that our workspaces are safe and that everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome. His recognition as a Safety Champion reflects his heart, his hard work, and the respect he’s earned from everyone around him. We are all so proud of him and grateful for all he does for our Town.”

The Safety Champion recognition is part of PERMA’s Safe + Sound Week campaign, which celebrates municipal employees who foster a culture of safety and prevention in the workplace. PERMA provides risk management services and workers’ compensation coverage to public entities across New York State, supporting over 800 member organizations.
