State of Emergency Effective Sunday, Feb. 22 at 6 AM Town Offices Closed Monday, Feb. 23 • East Hampton Town, NY
East Hampton Town has declared a State of Emergency effective 6:00 AM Sunday, February 22 in response to a severe winter storm bringing heavy snowfall, high winds, extreme cold, and hazardous roadway conditions throughout the Town.
The declaration follows advisories and warnings from the National Weather Service and was made in consultation with the Town Attorney’s Office, Police Department, and Highway Department. Forecasts indicate blizzard conditions, sustained winds, and significant snow accumulation that may impede travel and emergency response.
Under the emergency order, the Town Highway Department is authorized to take all necessary actions to monitor and maintain road conditions. The East Hampton Town Police Department is authorized to remove vehicles that interfere with snow removal or emergency operations.
In addition, all East Hampton Town offices will be closed on Monday, February 23, 2026. The closure includes:
- All Town offices
- All Recycling Centers (East Hampton and Montauk)
- The Montauk Playhouse
- All Human Services programs and activities
The State of Emergency will remain in effect for five days unless amended or rescinded sooner.
East Hampton Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez encouraged residents to take steps now to protect themselves and their neighbors.
“Please take time now to prepare and check in on those around you, especially seniors and neighbors who may need extra support,” said Supervisor Burke-Gonzalez. “If you can stay off the roads, please do. When we keep streets clear, we are helping our Highway crews work faster and making sure police, fire, and EMS can reach someone in an emergency. Looking out for one another is how we get through storms like this safely.”
Deputy Town Supervisor David Lys emphasized the importance of keeping roadways clear for emergency services.
“If you can stay home, please do,” said Deputy Supervisor Lys. “And do not park on public roads. Every vehicle left in the roadway slows snow removal and can prevent emergency vehicles from getting through. The best way to support our emergency services during this storm is to give them the space they need to work safely and efficiently.”
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable, and stay informed through official Town communications. Non-emergency issues should be reported to the East Hampton Town Police Department at 631-537-7575.
